Massage Therapy and Anxiety with Debra Curties, RMT
Guelph ON, February 27, 2012
about anxiety and anxiety disorders. This workshop will begin with a discussion of what anxiety is and the
effects of problem anxiety - its neurochemistry, its symptoms and secondary effects, its role as a complicating
factor in injury and disease, and its impact on health and quality of life. There will be a discussion of the
causes, nature and symptoms of common anxiety disorders and an overview of customary treatments.
Interestingly, relieving anxiety is turning out to be one of the most consistent and powerful observed effects
of massage in research findings - we will look at selections from this research data and discuss how this
information can help us to design effective massage treatment approaches.

massage therapy practice, but massage therapists are usually insufficiently informed about depression.
This workshop will explore what depression is, its symptoms and diagnosis, what is happening neurochemically,
and how depression impacts on health and quality of life. There will be a discussion of the causes, nature
and symptoms of common depression disorders and of customary treatment approaches. We will look at
information in the research literature about the role massage therapy can play in supporting the person with
depressive illness, and consider how this information might influence our decision-making in clinical practice.

Day 1: Massage Therapy & Anxiety
Despite the prevalence of anxiety issues in our clients, most massage therapists have not learned
much about anxiety and anxiety disorders. This workshop will begin with a discussion of what anxiety
is and the effects of problem anxiety—its neurochemistry, its symptoms and secondary effects, its role
as a complicating factor in injury and disease, and its impact on health and quality of life. There will be a
discussion of the causes, nature and symptoms of common anxiety disorders and an overview of customary
treatments. Interestingly, relieving anxiety is turning out to be one of the most consistent and powerful observed
effects of massage in research findings—we will look at selections from this research data and discuss how
this information can help us to design effective massage treatment approaches.
Day 2: Massage Therapy & Depression
Clients with feelings of situational depression or diagnosed depressive illness are seen quite commonly
in massage therapy practice, but massage therapists are usually insufficiently informed about depression.
This workshop will explore what depression is, its symptoms and diagnosis, what is happening neurochemically,
and how depression impacts on health and quality of life. There will be a discussion of the causes, nature and
symptoms of common depression disorders and of customary treatment approaches. We will consider information
in the research literature about the role massage therapy can play in supporting the person with depressive illness,
and consider how this information might influence our decision-making in clinical practice.
Day 3: Massage Therapy & Sleep
In this part of the workshop we will explore sleep, which is a subject of increasing interest with respect to
massage therapy efficacy in helping people sleep, but not a traditional area of knowledge of expertise for massage
therapists. There will be an overview of the nature and stages of sleep, sleep’s physiological functions, the broad-based
effects of insufficient sleep, and the role of sleep in physical and mental health. This will be followed by a discussion of
the causes, characteristics and classification of sleep disorders. We will also take a look at what is showing up in the
research literature about the role of massage therapy in promoting restorative sleep.

Gait-Related Pain and Dysfunction with Michael Bard, RMT
Sudbury ON, April 21-22, 2012
“Nothing epitomizes a level of independence and our perception of a good quality of life more than the ability to
travel independently under our own power from one place to another. We celebrate the development of this
ability in children and try and nurture and sustain it throughout our lifespan.” (Patla)
ability to compensate, such as increased energy expenditure, joint trauma, and associated pain. Pain with walking
is a primary complaint for many clients who seek massage therapy. To take corrective action for pain caused by
abnormal gait patterns, a good knowledge of normal gait patterns is required.
This workshop is intended to deepen the massage therapist's understanding of gait and its related dysfunctions. Topics
will include: normal gait cycle and related muscle activity (including a review of appropriate functional anatomy)
sequencing of myofascial-ligamentous effort and support during the gait cycle, the central nervous system’s integration
of visual, proprioceptive and vestibular sensory inputs, and common gait deviations.
The participant will gain knowledge and clinically relevant observational skills in order to better evaluate and treat
many gait-related disorders.

Restoring Mobility: the Clavicle with Randal Persad, Dip. Pharm, RMT
Toronto ON, May 5-6, 2012
stability is often over looked by many practitioners including massage therapists, physiotherapists and medical
doctors. It is very common for the practicing RMT to work with several clients a day who present with shoulder
discomfort. Treatment approaches vary from GH joint mobilization, to Swedish massage to myofascial release.
While all these approaches are beneficial, what is often missed are the ligamentous and myofascial attachments
of the clavicle. This workshop brings an increased awareness and focus to the clavicle, it’s role in glenohumeral
movement and the structures associated with it. It will also provide hands on practice and guidelines for working
with connective tissue structures that are important for clavicular mobility. Clavicular immobility is commonly associated
with conditions such as frozen shoulder, painful arc syndrome, post clavicular fracture, subacromial bursitis, rotator cuff
tendonitis and other shoulder pathologies.

Massage Therapy, Blood Pressure and the Heart with Debra Curties, RMT
Vernon BC, September 22-23, 2012
Massage therapists encounter clients with high blood pressure and heart-related concerns on an increasingly
frequent basis. It is important to be able to evaluate a client's case information for cardiovascular stressors, to ask
questions that will help evaluate the extent to which the heart has become compromised, and to adapt treatment plans
for safety and effectiveness. This 2-day seminar will begin with a concise review of cardiac function and dysfunction,
and then will take the participant through a series of practice-based scenarios to address case history taking and
treatment plan decision-making.

to say that the need for massage therapists to be familiar with this condition will only intensify. This 2-day workshop
begins with a review of the body's energy systems and shows how diabetes mellitus, a metabolic disorder, compromises
the ability to utilize food energy and maintain healthy tissues. We will study Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and
gestational diabetes, defining each and looking at how they onset and behave clinically. We will reflect on systemic health
complications that arise in diabetic bodies, emphasizing those that most affect massage practice, and consider diabetic
stability factors, discussing how to assess and manage stability issues in the massage context. The second day is focused
on clinical decision-making with diabetic clients, including case history taking and evaluation of risk factors, and works on
guidelines ranging from, for example, how to adjust around insulin pumps and injection sites to how to adapt hydrotherapy.
We will focus attention on peripheral circulatory and sensory impairments and related safety factors in treatment planning.
The second day also involves detailed consideration of two case studies.

exacerbated by massage or hydrotherapy, represent important information for massage therapists. It can be a
challenge to keep current in this subject area. We will begin this workshop with a review of the structure and
properties of the skin, followed by consideration of factors that impair skin health. The major focus will be on
examining the range of commonly seen skin lesions, benign and malignant. We will discuss their appearance/
characteristics, what causes them, what worsens or spreads them, which can be picked up through manual
contact, and the usual medical treatment responses. We will consider best hygienic responses and treatment
adaptations in the massage setting, including issues related to topical medications.
