About This Book
In the massage therapy world, pregnancy has historically been viewed as everything
from a natural process with no associated massage therapy risks to an absolute
contraindication to massage treatment. Neither extreme is realistic or helpful
for the practitioner who seeks guidance about how to provide effective and safe
therapy for pregnant clients. Fortunately, Carole Osborne-Sheets has produced a
text based on both research evidence and extensive clinical experience that meets
this need.
Pre- and Perinatal Massage Therapy is a clear and knowledgeable text that
enumerates in detail the benefits of receiving massage while pregnant, during labor,
and in the postpartum period. It explains the characteristics of each stage of pregnancy
and delivery and the associated massage treatment guidelines. Osborne-Sheets also explains
issues related to high risk pregnancies and common pregnancy complications, assisting the
massage therapist to find the appropriate balance between providing beneficial treatment
and ensuring that all pregnant clients receive the best possible health care.
