Making Sense of Research
Instructor: Martha Brown Menard, PHD, CMT
Most massage therapists know that there are increasing expectations on our profession
to become more evidence based. Understanding the evidence for what we do helps us
create the best treatment plan for our clients and enhances communication with other
health care professionals. This requires research literacy - the ability to locate,
evaluate, and make use of research information - but most of us do not have the necessary
background training in this area. Martha Brown Menard, Ph.D., CMT, who is the author of a
text called Making Sense of Research, has designed a 2-day workshop for students and
practitioners who are at the beginner stage with respect to learning research literacy
skills. Workshop participants will be introduced to methods and resources for searching
the internet for specific citations, and will learn to identify the different types of
research studies as well as the elements that support or detract from the credibility
of their results. Ultimately, the goal is to answer the question, "Is this useful
information that I will incorporate into my clinical practice?"
